I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy read with meaningful themes. I also enjoyed the ending, which provides closure for every character. Smith portrayed Hadley’s struggle with accepting her father’s new life beautifully. While the story is unlikely to occur in real life, it had some elements that can relate to anyone. I enjoyed reading The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, which was an easy read. When Hadley chooses to listen to her heart, her journey becomes much more exciting, and she may have a chance at mending her relationship with her dad and finding the boy of her dreams. Reluctantly, Hadley goes to her father’s wedding. They grow close, but get separated once in England. Although she is dreading the wedding, Hadley’s trip improves when she meets a cute British boy on her flight. who travels to England for her father’s wedding. The story follows Hadley, a teen from the U.S. Smith is a light read about following your heart and forgiving your family. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Whilst his missions tend to remain State-side, his previous war experience overseas makes him unique, and the leading investigator in his field. Ex-Ranger, now a Chief Warrant Officer with the Army’s Criminal Intelligence Division, his missions involve investigating criminal activity where US soldiers are involved. The main character, John Puller, is a veteran of six tours of Afghanistan, serving his country as his war hero father and big brother have done before him. The series is set in the present day, usually around Maryland and Virginia USA. The first book in the John Puller series is entitled Zero Day, followed by The Forgotten, The Escape and concluding (for the moment) with No Man’s Land. This kind of story arc is particularly satisfying to the bookworm who enjoys following the main character/s through a succeeding number of crime thrillers. Author David Baldacci tends to write five or six books in a series featuring the same hero. She also imparts a meta-narrative on the power and limitations of storytelling in Native culture. Mailhot reflects on motherhood as both a mother and a child, and the shame and pride she carries as an Indian woman. She also writes about her first marriage to a man named Vito, who took custody of their first child, Isadore. She focuses one essay on her mother, an activist who sometimes forgot to feed them, and one on her father, an alcoholic artist who sexually abused her as a baby. Throughout these essays, Mailhot recalls her life growing up on the reservation. She and her son Isaiah move in with Casey, and Mailhot gives birth to another son, whom she calls a Thunder Being. During the pregnancy, Mailhot begins an MFA and must go off her bipolar medication, which results in incredible emotional pain. Mailhot and Casey conceive a child in a pecan field during a particularly difficult period in their relationship. Despite the pain of her hospitalization and abandonment, Mailhot decides to continue her love affair with Casey-at first as a casual lover, and then monogamously. Mailhot records her time in the hospital from the perspective of an Indian woman, whose experience isn’t represented by the rational Western medical system. The beginning of the book chronicles Mailhot’s love affair with a White man named Casey, who leaves her after she checks herself into a psychiatric hospital and is diagnosed with PTSD and bipolar disorder. And from what I understand, your own family has members, relatives in both of those countries. And she has one week to get back to Bogota because a plane ticket is waiting for her to finally get to the United States and be reunited with her mother and her other siblings after so many years apart.ĪRI SHAPIRO, BYLINE: And so the book is in part an adventure story but at its core is this family that straddles two countries, divided between Colombia and the U.S. So Talia has lived 15 years away from her mother, and where "Infinite Country" begins, she is locked up in a penitentiary for young girls. But she was actually born in the United States and sent back to Bogota, her mother's hometown, as a baby as her mother tried to make way, make a better life for her other two children, Karina and Nando. PATRICIA ENGEL: Talia is a 15-year-old girl who is living in Bogota, Colombia. Our co-host Ari Shapiro spoke to her about the main character in this book, a teenager named Talia. In this story, the central family has one foot in Colombia and one in the U.S. It's an ongoing process, a constant flow of people across borders. In the new novel "Infinite Country," immigration is not a single event that happens at a point in time. |
